FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA-- A Northern Arizona University forest ecologist is using dozens of detailed century-old maps of 1- to 7-hectare patches of forest across the southern United States to document measurable changes in the forests over time. She and her colleagues have found that the thickening ponderosa forests appear to have reduced the number and kinds of plants on the forest floor.
