Summary

Recent studies have shown that the intricate spatial and temporal patterns displayed by Earth's aurora are fractal, that is, they are the same when viewed on any scale. In their Perspective, Freeman and Watkins discuss the evidence for this fractal behavior and ask how it may arise.
