Summary

PAS domains are sensor modules in bacterial two-component regulatory systems, but are also present in diverse eukaryotic proteins. In his essay that won the Amersham Biosciences and Science Grand Prize, Jared Rutter describes how metabolite sensing by PAS domains allows essential cellular processes like circadian rhythm, protein synthesis and sugar storage to be regulated by cellular metabolism.
