A prominent infectious-disease researcher was arrested 14 January and spent a week in jail after allegedly lying to federal officials about the status of 30 vials of plague bacteria in his Texas Tech University laboratory. Bioscientists say the bizarre case, in which the vials were first reported missing and later said to have been destroyed, highlights the increasingly tense legal climate surrounding researchers working with potential bioweapons.
