This spring, if confirmed as expected, 19-year World Health Organization veteran Jong Wook Lee will become director general of the world's most influential voice on public health matters. Part of the challenge will be to lead an organization that many say is underfunded, overcommitted, and burdened by bureaucracy. But perhaps the most important criterion by which he'll be judged is the progress made against AIDS, a disease that threatens to overwhelm public health efforts across the developing world.
