The flat shape of most leaves enables them to capture sunlight for photosynthesis more efficiently. But how do leaves develop their flat shape? In their Perspective, McConnell and Barton discuss new work ( Nath et al .) that reveals how the differential expression of certain genes within developing leaves of the snapdragon makes these leaves flat.
