Summary

Using a technique that blocks specific RNA molecules from producing proteins, researchers report on page 2039 that they have screened nearly half of the fruit fly genome and netted four new apparent Hedgehog genes. The cascade of signals in the Hedgehog biochemical pathway guides early embryonic development, and if reactivated later in life, it can cause cancer.
