Summary

As a new respiratory disease that originated in Southeast Asia spread this week and raised alarms, especially in Hong Kong, the global hunt for the mysterious pathogen behind the outbreak took an unexpected turn. Just as evidence seemed to point to a paramyxovirus, researchers have fingered a candidate from a very different virus family, the coronaviruses.
