Summary

This week, scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, are expected to present compelling evidence that they have melted gold nuclei into their component quarks. Though no one is claiming a discovery, the new results make it hard to avoid the conclusion that RHIC has created a quark-gluon plasma, a form of matter last seen a few microseconds after the big bang.
