Summary

We live in a society where science touches every aspect of our lives. Yet, the general public is often unable to understand the consequences of discoveries or to assess the significance of sensational news stories; administrators and legislators are called upon to make decisions that affect millions of lives without having the scientific background information needed to make intelligent choices. In his essay, Sejnowski argues that the time has come to create a new Cable Science Network (CSN) that brings expert commentators and informed public debate on scientific issues directly into millions of homes and offices. CSN would be on tap 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and would provide timely scientific information on issues that affect our lives and our future.
