To address concerns about genetically modified (GM) crops in the United Kingdom, a series of Farm Scale Evaluations were set up throughout England and Scotland to determine the effects of herbicide-tolerant GM crops versus conventional crops on farmland biodiversity. The results of this group of studies have now been published by the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. In a thoughtful and balanced Perspective, Freckleton, Sutherland and Watkinson explain the findings of the Farm Scale Evaluation papers and discuss their implications for lifting the moratorium on growing GM crops in the United Kingdom.
