SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA-- A record 10,000 earth, ocean, atmospheric, and planetary scientists gathered here last month for the union's fall meeting. Paleoseismologists reported that a 27-quake history of the San Andreas fault reveals a disturbing amount of erratic behavior.
