Summary

Plants have developed an elaborate self-incompatibility response to prevent fertilization by self pollen. In their Perspective, Goring and Walker discuss new work ( Murase et al.) that identifies a receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase as a crucial player in the self-incompatibility response.
