Ecosystem complexity has been a huge challenge for marine ecologists and conservation biologists, and recent discoveries of great microbial diversity and abundance have further compounded the problem. In their Perspective, Azam and Worden propose a unifying ecosystems biology approach, treating marine ecosystems as biochemical matrices and molecular architectures.
