Summary

Some of the most exciting developments in materials science involve substances that incorporate nanostructural elements. Yet the influence of these nanostructures on basic mechanical properties such as deformation is not fully understood. In his Perspective, Hemker calls attention to the results of Budrovic et al. in the same issue in which x-ray scattering was used to probe dislocation activity in nanocrystalline metals. The experiments suggest that x-ray probes can yield important information about the behavior of nanocrystalline materials.
