Summary

It has long been debated whether and how voltage-gated ion channels are affected by the lipid environment of the plasma membrane. In his Perspective, Hilgemann discusses new work ( Oliver et al.) showing that the inactivation of voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels can be modulated by the lipids PIPand arachidonic acid.
