Summary

Failure to remove apoptotic cells and cell debris has been linked to the development of autoimmunity. In their Perspective, Züllig and Hengartner discuss a study from Nagata and colleagues that identifies a crucial bridging protein, MFG-E8, as essential for the removal of apoptotic cells ( Hanayama et al.).
