Enzymes catalyze biological reactions with amazing efficiency, and years of biochemical research have been directed at understanding how they work. In their Perspective, Sterner and Schmid describe recent work ( Dwyer et al. ) that brings us closer to the ultimate goal of designing enzymes with tailored activities by using computer design to build catalytic activity onto an inert protein scaffold.
