Although the diversity of terrestrial species of the Amazon basin is well documented, aquatic species inhabiting the Amazon River and its tributaries have been little studied. In their Perspective, Gascon and Smith discuss a comprehensive survey of electric fish species in a 2000-km transect of the Amazon basin ( Fernandes et al.), which reveals patterns of diversity among aquatic species akin to those found for terrestrial creatures.
