In a Perspective, Miller discusses new data on transgenic mice showing that better antioxidative defenses can boost life span in a mammal. Other long-lived mutants, in contrast, resist multiple forms of cell injury, and mutants with low oxidation resistance can nonetheless retain normal longevity. Comparisons among long- and short-lived species could reveal new links between stress resistance and aging.
