Summary

Physiological evidence links the hippocampus to representation of the environment. However, nonspatial signals also activate hippocampal neurons. In his Perspective, Buzsáki discusses the proposal made by Leutgeb et al . that a dual coding scheme by hippocampal neurons handles this perplexing problem. The idea is based on observations of ensemble activity of hippocampal neurons in rats placed in either the same or different chambers and in the same or different rooms.
