On 21 July, the U.S. National Science Foundation chose two established mines--the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, and the Henderson Mine in Empire, Colorado--as possible sites for a multipurpose underground laboratory, passing over sites that would have required builders to excavate thousands of feet of rock.
