Summary

Read literally, the past half-billion years of marine fossils say it took 5 million to 10 million years for new species to begin replacing the losses suffered during extinctions. But now researchers have removed some of fossil record's imperfections, and in this revised history, at least, there's no "traffic cop" to hold life back (see related story on Science Careers).
