Summary

On page 1737 of this issue of Science, researchers describe how water temperature and other environmental factors determine which strains of the photosynthetic bacteria called Prochlorococcus thrive at particular places. And on page 1768, they reveal newly discovered "guest" genes in two strains that may help each strain survive in particular ocean environments. (Read more.)
