Summary

Austrian science minister Johannes Hahn announced on 7 May that he intends to withdraw the country from CERN membership by the end of 2010 because his ministry thinks its €16 million annual contribution would be better spent on smaller research projects. The matter has attracted huge public interest in Austria. Researchers have been quick to gather support for reversing the decision, setting up Web sites for letters and an online petition that attracted 5500 signatures in its first 24 hours.
