Thomas Frieden, who has been New York City's health commissioner since 2002, has been appointed by President Barack Obama to direct the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In a sense, he will be both an insider and an outsider, for despite his dozen years as a CDC employee working in New York City and later in India on tuberculosis control, he was never assigned to the agency's sprawling headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
