Patch Clamp Systems

The Ion-Flux-HT and IonFlux-16 Automated Patch Clamp Systems for ion-channel drug discovery offer gains in throughput, workflow simplicity, and affordability. These new systems combine Fluxion's proprietary microfluidic technology with integrated electronics to automate the traditional patch clamp assay. Applications include primary and secondary screening, lead optimization, and toxicology screening. The Ion-Flux-HT system includes 64 amplifiers and delivers between 8,000 and 10,000 assays per day at a cost of just 30 cents per data point using 384-well plates. The IonFlux-16 includes 16 amplifiers and uses a 96-well plate format. It delivers 2,000 data points per day at an affordable cost. The systems make use of a plate reader format for simplicity and integration with existing automated liquid handlers. The IonFlux technology automates cell manipulation, trapping, sealing, whole-cell formation, and precise voltage protocols.

Dry Baths

New compact, rapid-heating, microprocessor-controlled dry baths are suitable for a wide range of tasks in most laboratories, including clinical, histology, and molecular biology applications. They provide a heating speed from ambient temperature to 100°C in 12 minutes. With dimensions of 15 cm by 15 cm by 13.5 cm, they save bench space. They offer precise, accurate control of integral high-wattage heaters via a digital microprocessor control panel. The block chamber is constructed from molded aluminum, so the baths offer heat uniformity because of the perfect contact with the base of the interchangeable blocks, while retaining heating efficiency because the molded construction does not warp over time. A user calibration function allows easy calibration to suit in-house standards and requirements, while an RS232 port can export block temperature activity. Data-logging software that links to a computer can also be supplied.

TIRF Microscopy

The Laser TIRF 3 is a total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy system for reproducible examinations of near-cell membrane dynamic processes and interactions of single molecules in cell-free systems with high time resolution. The Laser TIRF 3 can be combined with other procedures and techniques, such as atomic force microscopy, for use in the biosciences, biophysics, biochemistry, and molecular. The technical features of TIRF 3 provide users with a wide variety of experimental possibilities. The TIRF slider is available in two versions, with manual or motorized angle setting. The new laser module offers a flexible choice of dyes. It can be equipped with up to four different solid-state lasers. Additional features include high time resolution, reproducible angle settings, and reproducible depths of penetration.

Weighing Terminal

The IND226x weighing terminal has received a full range of approvals for worldwide use in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, uniting safety, productivity, and quality. The weighing terminal's stainless steel housing can withstand the toughest operating and cleaning conditions in chemical and pharmaceutical facilities. Exact container filling is ensured by the seven-segment LED display and integrated over/under control weighing mode. The IND226x is compatible with all of Mettler Toledo's analog weighing platforms. It is equipped with a mountable serial data interface and an interface converter for connection to computers and printers via an RS232 interface. This capability makes the unit usable remotely in hazardous areas. Its power supply options allow for its use in a wide range of application areas, including mobile weighing with a rechargeable battery.

pH Electrodes

Jenway Performance pH electrodes reduce analysis time through rapid equilibration compared with conventional pH electrodes with silver chloride reference systems, and increase the reproducibility of results following exposure to extremes of pH and temperature. Two new glass-bodied models include a 12-mm general purpose model and a 4.5-mm semimicro-electrode with 90-mm reach for small volume samples. Both provide high levels of accuracy in general solutions and biological samples containing Tris buffers. The electrodes' faster response times in pH buffers allow for rapid calibration. The general purpose model is recommended for a wide range of applications, including chemical production, environmental monitoring, food processing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The semimicro version is suited to the measurement of volumes smaller than 500 µl, commonly required in biochemistry laboratories.
