Summary

This week, Merck and the U.K. biomedical charity Wellcome Trust established a nonprofit vaccine development institute to be based in India. The $145 million private-public partnership will focus on creating vaccines for low-income countries, with an emphasis on making existing vaccines more affordable and easily distributed and on combating unmet disease needs, such as a vaccine for group A streptococci.
