Keeping track of the number of jobs created and saved by the $787 billion stimulus package is a staggering challenge for the Obama Administration. It's also extra work for grant recipients, who must report how they're spending the money and its impact on scientific employment. A federal pilot project launched this summer aims to increase the accuracy of the count and reduce the burden on U.S. research universities. If it succeeds, it could also lead to a better way of tracking how federal investments in science affect the country's long-term economic health.
