Summary

For weeks, Japan's scientific community agonized over spending cuts recommended by a government task force. Now researchers are breathing a sigh of relief: Although some projects will absorb big hits, the new administration's first budget, approved by the Cabinet at the end of December, calls for relatively minor changes in science priorities.
