Summary

Google's declaration last week that it will no longer play ball with Chinese censors has inflamed tensions between backers of the free flow of information and advocates of China's increasingly assertive efforts to cleanse the Internet of offensive material. Much more is at stake than the possible demise of a single Web site, Google.cn. If the government were to retaliate by adding Google.com to its roster of forbidden sites, access could be cut off to Gmail and two research tools, Google Scholar and Google Earth.
