Down the hill from the Japan Monkey Centre, located between Tokyo and Kyoto, 14 chimpanzees live far from the public eye—although they have grabbed the attention of scientists worldwide. The chimpanzees are research subjects at the Primate Research Institute, part of Kyoto University, and since 1978, researchers have conducted cognitive studies that have stretched human minds about the capabilities of our closest animal relatives.
