After a run of "top kill" attempts failed to stanch the flow of crude oil from its Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico, oil giant BP has one major option left: plug the flow near its source by drilling into the bottom of the runaway well. That will require hitting an 18-centimeter-wide well 5500 meters beneath the gulf's surface. It may sound like a tall order, but drillers are confident.
