Summary

Can a world-class research university thrive on a subtropical island lacking a scientific tradition? Physicist Jonathan Dorfan intends to make that happen. Appointed president-elect of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology this summer, Dorfan will steer OIST through the final phase of start-up and enroll its first graduate students in 2012. Science interviewed him about his plans for the university.
