2010 was a busy year for science and science policy. Science lists some developments that tested the limits of our knowledge and influenced thinking about the global research enterprise. Notable events included the magnitude-7.0 earthquake in Haiti, the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico, the incorporation of a synthetic genome into a microbe, the first positive HIV microbicide results, and the end of a deadly cattle disease called rinderpest.
