The winner and three honorable mentions have been chosen by Science and the National Science Foundation in the Illustration category in the 2010 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge. Top honors go to Ivan Konstantinov, Yury Stefanov, Aleksander Kovalevsky, and Yegor Voronin of Visual Science Company for "Human Immunodeficiency Virus 3D," which depicts all the proteins involved when HIV breaks into immune cells, color-coded according to whether they belong to the host or the virus. Honorable mentions go to Insuk Lee, Michael Ahn, Edward Marcotte, and Seung Yon Rhee of the Carnegie Institution for Science for "AraNet: A Genome-wide Gene Function Association Network for Arabidopsis thaliana"; Jonathan Heras of Equinox Graphics Ltd. for "Enterobacteria Phage T4," an illustration of a virus attacking an Escherichia coli bacterium; and the Mitotic Spindle Group of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, for "Proposed Structure of Yeast Mitotic Spindle."
