Summary

Researchers are encouraged by results from initial safety trials of regulatory T cells (T regs), in which the cells were given to patients vulnerable to graft-versus-host disease, a sometimes lethal complication of transplants of bone marrow and bloodmaking stem cells that occurs when mature immune cells in the transplant turn on their new host. The first clinical trial to pit T-regs against an autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes, has also recently begun. And European scientists are starting a study of the cells' ability to forestall rejection of transplanted kidneys.
