Summary

The National Institutes of Health's initiative to diagnose mystery illnesses has stopped taking new applications. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released a final version of a recovery plan for the northern spotted owl. Art restorers have bred bacteria to remove organic material and pollutants from artworks. And this week's numbers quantify plastics ingested by North Pacific fish, proposed funding by the European Commission for research and innovation, and land in northern California that will be lost to wine-grape cultivation by 2040 because of global warming.
