Summary

Cancer researchers had high expectations when Harold Varmus took the helm of the National Cancer Institute a year ago this month. Many felt there was no better choice than the former National Institutes of Health (NIH) director, Nobelist, and molecular biologist. And Varmus said he relished the chance to return as a hands-on director of NIH's largest institute. The big challenge is dealing with the grimmest budget in years. Science offers excerpts from a recent interview.
