Summary

The U.S. Office of Naval Research has joined forces with the Texas-based National Math and Science Initiative to increase the number of high school students taking rigorous science and math courses. Its $1.1 million grant, announced last month, could prompt a closer look at one controversial aspect of the initiative's approach: paying students to do well on standardized tests.
