Neuroscientist Henry Markram has repeatedly claimed that it should be possible within 10 years to model the human brain in silico. That assertion has excited the imaginations of science journalists and the public and invited scorn from other scientists. In an interview with Science last week, Markram defended his 10-year claim but painted a more nuanced picture of his goals. The media and his critics, he says, have too often focused on sensationalist details and misunderstood the broader goal he is trying to achieve.
