Summary

Yes, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) should continue funding biomedical and behavioral research with chimpanzees, but with new stipulations. That's the recommendation of a committee commissioned by NIH and organized by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council. Science obtained a copy of the report, which it shared with researchers in the field before the official release on 15 December. Reactions differ widely, in part because it is difficult to sort out how the proposed new restrictions differ from existing ones.
