Summary

In an interview with Science, chemist C.N.R. Rao, science adviser to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, talked about the need to create a critical mass of capable scientists in India to prevent the country from losing ground to China and other nations. He bemoaned the deterioration of India's academic institutions and its tendency to steer talented individuals into information technology. He also worried that scientists are losing ground to activists.
