Summary

The National Science Foundation and NASA got off to a strong start last week in the annual congressional budget race. Separate spending bills in the House of Representatives and the Senate would spare both agencies from the severe cuts forecast next year for most federal agencies in the wake of last summer's budget agreement between Congress and the White House and a budget resolution approved earlier this month by the House. And while legislators aren't expected to cross the finish line for the 2013 budget until after the November elections, an early lead can't hurt.
