The first nanopore sequencers will depend on protein pores (see main text), but many in the field envision replacing these biological channels with solid-state ones. They also foresee controlling DNA's movement through a sequencer's channels electrically rather than depending on another protein to ratchet the bases along the pore. Ditching the proteins could pave the way to even cheaper devices that take advantage of semiconductor manufacturing technology to mass-produce and shrink these sequencers.
