Universal quantum computers in the strict sense do not yet exist, but it is still of fundamental importance to know which problems they can solve more efficiently than classical computers. On page 1130 of this issue, Jordan et al. (1) report on such an efficient quantum algorithm that can solve the equations of quantum field theory (QFT). These equations reconcile quantum mechanics with special relativity and are crucial for studies of the interactions of fundamental particles.
