Summary

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life sentences without the possibility of parole violate the Eighth Amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishment when applied to juvenile offenders. Laurence Steinberg, a child psychologist at Temple University, was the chief scientific consultant on amicus curiae briefs submitted to the court by the American Psychological Association in the cases involved. Steinberg discussed the decisions in an interview with Science.
