And the Band Played On, the 1987 epic tome about the early years of the AIDS epidemic, featured Atlanta prominently, largely because what is now called the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is based here. But author Randy Shilts, who died of AIDS 7 years later, made nary a mention of the city's epidemic: At that point, the virus had made little headway here. Today, if its large public hospital, Grady Memorial, is any measure, Atlanta has one of the most out-of-control epidemics in the country.
