Summary

The 19th International AIDS Conference, held in Washington, D.C., from 22 to 27 July, marked the meeting's return to the United States for the first time in 22 years because President Barack Obama lifted an immigration ban on HIV-infected people in 2010. The U.S. government is leading the effort to provide lifesaving antiretroviral drugs to everyone in need and also articulating a bold agenda to take advantage of the breakthrough finding last year that people on treatment who fully suppress HIV rarely transmit the virus to others.
