Summary

A world-class university system is a powerful engine for economic development, and research is the fuel powering that engine. In the first story in a series examining the key ingredients needed to create and maintain global research universities, which will be appearing over the next several months, Science explores the role of mobility by focusing on the increasing flow of talent into East Asia, in particular Hong Kong and Singapore, which are actively luring foreign talent with generous budgets and other perks. The increasing use of international searches to fill top positions has lowered the barriers to entry, and the widespread use of English is making Westerners feel more at home.
